What to Expect When You Buy Surplus Food

Buying a surprise bag from a restaurant or bakery through Last Bite is different from placing a regular order. Here is what the experience actually looks like, so you know what you are getting into before your first purchase.
You do not choose what you get
This is the main thing to understand upfront. A surplus bag contains whatever the business had left at the end of the day. You will see the food category before you buy, for example "bakery items" or "hot meals" or "full restaurant meal", but not the specific contents. The surprise is part of the model. It is how businesses can offer consistent pricing without having to evaluate exactly what is in each bag.
For most people, this turns into a feature rather than a limitation. You try things you would not normally order and discover dishes or restaurants you did not know about. But it does mean this is not the right option for days when you have a specific craving and nothing else will do.
The quality is the same as full-price orders
Surplus food is not inferior food. It is the same food the business was selling at full price earlier in the day, prepared to the same standard, just not ordered before closing. The only difference is timing. The bag at the end of the day contains what is left from that day's service.
Some first-time buyers are surprised by this. They expect something discounted because of quality, and instead find they are getting the same quality at a fraction of the price, simply because the business prefers to recover some revenue over discarding it.
How the pickup works
After you pay in the app, you receive a confirmation with your order code and pickup window. The pickup window is the time range during which you can collect, typically 30 to 90 minutes before the business closes. Arrive at any point during that window, show your code to the staff, and collect your bag. It usually takes less than two minutes.
You do not need to explain anything or negotiate. The staff know what a Last Bite order is and have your bag ready or will pack it quickly when you arrive. Go to the counter or pickup area as you would for any takeaway order.
Allergen and dietary information
Each listing shows allergen and dietary information where the business has provided it. If you have a severe allergy, check the listing carefully before purchasing. If there is anything you are uncertain about, you can contact the business directly through the app before you buy.
The surprise bag model is not ideal for people with highly restrictive diets who need to know exactly what they are eating. If you have a common intolerance or preference, many businesses do note this in the listing. But if you have a severe allergy, use your judgement about whether the risk is manageable.
What if something goes wrong
Occasionally a business cannot fulfil an order. This happens, particularly for small businesses where a sudden event can interrupt service. If this happens, you receive a full refund automatically. You do not need to contact support.
If you have an issue with the quality of what you received, the Last Bite support team can review it. Businesses on the platform are expected to maintain their normal food quality standards.
Tips for getting the most from it
- 1. Check listings early in the afternoon as popular ones sell quickly.
- 2. Try different types of businesses. Bakery bags in the morning and restaurant bags in the evening are quite different experiences.
- 3. Arrive at the start of the pickup window for hot food if you want it at its best temperature.
- 4. If you find a business you like, follow them so you see their listings as soon as they go up.
