Hydration in Caribbean Heat: What to Drink and What to Stop Drinking

Almost all the hydration advice in circulation was written for people who live somewhere cold. Two litres a day, eight glasses, drink when thirsty - none of that survives contact with a construction site in Portmore in August, where the temperature is 33 degrees, the humidity is 80 per cent and sweat evaporates too slowly to cool you properly.
Humidity is the part that gets missed. Sweating only cools you when the sweat evaporates, and in humid air it evaporates poorly. So you lose the fluid without getting the full cooling benefit, which means high humidity produces both more dehydration and more heat strain than the temperature alone would suggest.
How much you actually lose
A person working hard in tropical heat can lose one to one and a half litres of sweat an hour. Over an eight-hour day outdoors that is a substantial fraction of body weight, and it is not replaced by three trips to a water cooler.
Thirst is a lagging indicator. By the time you feel it, you are typically already down one to two per cent of body weight in fluid, and cognitive performance and physical work capacity have already dropped measurably. For anyone working in heat, the correct approach is scheduled drinking rather than waiting to feel thirsty.

The sugar nobody counts
Two box drinks and a soft drink in a working day is roughly 450 calories and 100 grams of sugar consumed without any sense of having eaten. For most people this is the largest single removable item in their diet and the one they think about least, because drinks do not feel like food.
The realistic move is not elimination. It is substitution during the day and keeping the sweet drink for one deliberate occasion. Water and unsweetened tea while working, one cold sweet thing in the afternoon if you want it. That alone shifts most people into a calorie deficit without touching a meal.
When electrolytes genuinely matter
Electrolyte drinks are heavily oversold to people sitting in air conditioning and genuinely important for people who are not. The dividing line is roughly an hour of hard sweating, or any full day of physical work in the sun.
Sodium is the one that matters most, because it is what you lose most of in sweat and what determines whether the fluid you drink is retained or passed straight through. This is the specific weakness of coconut water: excellent potassium, relatively little sodium. Paired with something salty it works well; alone, after very heavy sweating, it is incomplete.
Working outdoors: a practical routine
- Start hydrated. Half a litre of water in the hour before you begin. Arriving already down is the most common mistake.
- Drink on a schedule. 200 to 300 ml every twenty minutes while working, rather than a litre at lunch. Steady intake is retained better than large boluses.
- Salt the food. One case where the usual salt advice inverts. Someone losing several litres of sweat a day needs the sodium, and normal seasoned Jamaican food supplies it.
- Use shade and pace. Hydration does not substitute for getting out of the sun. Heat illness kills people who were drinking.
- Rehydrate afterwards. Roughly 1.5 litres for every kilogram of body weight lost during the day. Weighing before and after is the only accurate way to know.
Warning signs to take seriously
- Heat exhaustion: heavy sweating, cold clammy skin, weak rapid pulse, nausea, dizziness, headache, muscle cramps. Move to shade, cool the skin, sip fluids, lie down with legs raised.
- Heat stroke: body temperature above 40 degrees, hot dry skin or the sweating stopping altogether, confusion, slurred speech, loss of consciousness. This is a medical emergency. Call for help, cool the person aggressively with water and airflow, do not give fluids by mouth if they are confused.
- Who is most at risk: older adults, young children, people on diuretics or blood pressure medication, people with heart or kidney disease, and anyone unaccustomed to working in heat. Acclimatisation takes about a fortnight, and the first days are the dangerous ones.

How much water should you drink in Caribbean heat?
The commonly quoted two litres a day is a temperate-climate figure. Working outdoors in Jamaican heat and humidity, sweat losses of one to one and a half litres an hour are entirely normal, so intake needs to rise accordingly. The practical guide is urine colour: pale straw is right, dark yellow means drink more, completely clear all day may mean you are overdoing it.
Is coconut water good for hydration?
It is a decent natural rehydration drink - genuinely high in potassium, with some sodium and magnesium, and around 60 to 100 calories per nut. For heavy sweating it is lower in sodium than a purpose-made oral rehydration solution, so for serious fluid loss it works best alongside something salty rather than on its own.
Do sports drinks work better than water?
Only when you have been sweating hard for more than about an hour, or working in heat all day. For ordinary activity, water is sufficient and the sugar in a sports drink is simply extra calories. For a labourer in the sun for eight hours, the sodium genuinely matters.
How do I know if I am dehydrated?
Early signs are thirst, dark urine, headache, tiredness and difficulty concentrating. More serious signs are dizziness on standing, muscle cramps, nausea, a rapid pulse and stopping sweating despite the heat. That last one is a warning sign of heat illness and needs immediate cooling and medical attention.
Does drinking cold water in the heat cause harm?
No. Cold drinks lower core temperature slightly and people voluntarily drink more of them, which makes them a good choice in heat rather than a problem. The folk belief that cold drinks in the sun cause illness has no physiological basis.
